Pre-Searching Analysis:

1. What UNIQUE words, distinctive names, abbreviations, or acronyms are associated with the topic?

2. What societies, organizations, or groups might have information on the subject on their web pages? Use the "Phrase" search mode or enter their names into the "Phrase" edit box in the "Custom" search mode to search for a home page that might contain links to other pages, journals, discussion groups, or databases on the subject.

3. What other words are likely to be in ANY Web documents on your topic? Search these in the "All Words" search mode or enter them into the "All Words" edit box in the "Custom" search mode.

4. Do any of the words in 1, 2, or 3 belong in phrases or strings - together in a certain order? (i.e., "affirmative action" or "communicable diseases") Search for these in the "Phrase" search mode or enter their names into the "Phrase" edit box in the "Custom" search mode.

5. For any of the terms in 4, are there any synonyms, variant spellings, or equivalent terms that would also appear in relevant documents? Search these in the "Any Word" search mode or enter them into the "Any Word" edit box in the "Custom" search mode.

6. Are there any extraneous or irrelevant documents these words might pick up? Exclude these from your search by entering unwanted words in the "Exclude" edit box in the "Custom" search mode.

7. If the search return no results, find BROADER terms the topic could be related to.
