What
is FirstStop WebSearch™?
It's
incredibly fast desktop software that searches multiple search
engines and websites simultaneously for a more comprehensive
Internet experience. This
award winning, customizable multi-search engine has been described
as the "FASTEST no-nonsense meta search for the net".
It runs on any MS Windows desktop and works with as
many sources as selected by the user. By utilizing the resources
of the desktop, FirstStop WebSearch™; offers random or sequential
viewing of results, sorts by columns, saves as XML or HTML
files, and keyword history searches. Most importantly, FirstStop
WebSearchT eliminates the middleman or server; by directly
accessing the search engines.
Why
a desktop meta search?
Web
users seek fast results and the "desktop" meta search leverages
the power of the desktop computer to simultaneously gather
information from user selected sources. Instead of jumping
from site to site with a different interfaces and commands.
FirstStop WebSearch™ provides a familiar and intelligent interface
for pre-search and a powerful set of tools and functions for
post-processing, as well as office integration. For example:
With FirstStop WebSearch™ the user can select from pre-set
or user-defined categories of search engines to search from.
Also the user can use a query wizard to conduct an advanced
search without any knowledge of "Boolean" operators or complex
database language. In addition, a user can customize the interface
to their style and needs. We find the desktop meta search
results fulfills a user search needs, faster and in a more
comprehensive format. The desktop meta search has features
that can not be found or performed on a Web based search tools.
For example: Some desktop search tools can save searches in
XML, DOC, or other formats. Also, some can save searches for
later use or modification. And, some can schedule and compare
search results. All of these features found on desktop search
tools that are not available or possible on their Web based
cousins are numerous. We do however also recommend the Web
server based search engines.
Why
a multi-search engine, rather than individual search engines?
While
some individual search engines are particularly effective
and sophisticated, none are entirely comprehensive. NEC
Research Institute has found and that is, individual search
engines cover only a small portion of the available Web,
and their coverage provides a low percent of overlap. And,
the individual search engines may not be update very often.
For example, Altavista is updated every 9-10 days, while
Lycos is updated hourly. The spider programs used to update
databases are not very fast. Excite's spider search takes
up to 28 days to complete it's work, while in comparison,
Magellan's takes 4 days. The multiple (meta) search engines
search more than one search site at a time and provides
a much broader range of information more quickly.
